When a buddy of mine asked me whether I thought the aforementioned was a good businesswoman, I had to think carefully.

I'm not a fan of the shows, have never quite understood them but I do understand the power of a strong brand.

Whatever you may think of Kris Kardashian one cannot deny that she is a pretty smart woman, she's taken advantage of their brand, knows what the media wants and has given it to them.

She's capitalised on her greatest assets...her kids...saw the opportunities and took advantage. There seems to be an insatiable appetite for all things Kardashian. I'm not a fan but understand that its the way of the world - that does not mean I condone the intense drive for media profiling but I do understand the business modelling. I cannot comment on their personal lives (as I do not watch the shows) though I know the Kardashian brand sells and is highly lucrative.

Lessons one can learn from Kris:

1. See an opportunity and take advantage of it - the appetite for reality TV for the Kardashians.
2. Know your strengths - in Kris' case her family, PR and brand image.
3. Understand your market - Kris clearly knows that there is a huge audience, willing to buy into the idea of her family and the glamour of their image.

Interviews can often be a daunting and nerve-racking experiences. Trying to impress your potential new employer whilst maintaining your personality can be difficult but it doesn't have to be. Here are a few fool-proof tips on achieving results in your interview.

• Preparation - make sure you practice at least twice before your actual interview with a friend or relative. Try to make the practice as professional as possible. Practice makes perfect.

• Confidence - this is something that one needs to instil in oneself. If you have applied for your dream job and you have been invited to an interview you need to build your confidence up to the point of unbreakable self-belief. This will enable you to be clear and genuine in an interview. Treat the interview like a business meeting, afterall the employer needs you just as much as you need them so make sure it shows.

• Body Language - quite often we overlook the way in which our body language is read by others particularly in an interview situation. Try to maintain a relaxed yet professional posture at all times, with eye contact and limited "fiddling" distractions.

• Articulation - be as articulate and precise in all your answers as possible. Limiting the amount of waffle will focus the interviewer’s attention on the positive aspects of your answers. If you don't understand a question or know how to answer it be honest and say so.

• Presentation - it may seem obvious but it’s so important to make the right impression based on your presentation and appearance. Dress smartly and comfortably in a manner which reflects your professionalism.

These are just a few tips but for more information and guidance please. Whatever the outcome of your interview always take on board the experience, learn from it and stay positive – every interview you have brings you one step closer to your perfect job.

Over the past few years I have been lucky enough to have been part of an important series of events that celebrated diversity and promoted positive thinking within the black and ethnic minority community.

More than just a superficial showcase but a necessary celebration of black women's beauty in all its forms. With a powerful mix of workshops and seminars, an acknowledgement of enterprise in its stalls area and its recognition of beauty in the pampering areas the event has been growing from strength to strength since its humble beginnings in the Imperial War Museum.

In 2010 the event was bigger and better than ever before at the Highgate Newtown Centre with an exclusive screening of the highly anticipated documentary "What makes the Black Woman Beautiful" by producer and film maker, Isaac Asha Tomiczek. The documentary tackles the thought-provoking, controversial and often sensitive issue of beauty and black women's experience of beauty. This goes beyond race or racial stereo-typing but deals with an issue which is so often overlooked by mainstream society. At the same time it is a real reflection of the struggles that all women, regardless of age, experience, race and background, have to deal with in the acceptance of their own identities.
The film features women from all backgrounds including the critically acclaimed Shingai Shoniwa (The Noisettes), Zaraah Abraham, Judith Jacob, Angie Le Mar, DJ MistaJam, Jasmia Robinson (Britain's Next Top Model Finalist), Des O'Connor (the UK's only black dating coach) and the Dream Team (Maggi Udofia, Ronke Lawal, Lillian Ogbogoh, Ronke Adeyemi, Sophia A Jackson and Angel Smith) but men too.

This is a provocative and inspirational film which will leave a resonating imprint in the minds of the many who watch and the few who never understood "What makes the black woman beautiful".

Would you let an untrained builder renovate your home? What about a plumber on your bathroom? Or an electrician re-wiring your house? No? So why is it any different with that other important asset called your business?

DIY is in our DNA but sometimes doing it yourself might end up creating more harm than good. Here are three questions you should be asking yourself before you decide to go down that path:

Question 1: Am I sufficiently qualified and skilled enough to do this myself?

If you’re not, save yourself, your staff and your customers the pain by paying for someone who does.

Questions you should be asking them before appointment:

what are your qualifications? (if they say books or their knowledge smells of franchise manuals walk away)

can I talk to some of your clients directly? (it’s not important what they say, it’s what their clients say)

can you tell me about the results you have achieved? (“good anecdotal feedback” isn’t a quantifiable, commercial result, “X sales in Y months” is)

are you open to being paid by performance? (if they are great, they’re willing to share the risk, if they aren’t you know they’re all talk and no trousers)

Question 2: What are the business risks of doing it myself?

You might get it right but you might get it wrong. The cost might be a poor quality branding, confused customers, reduced leads and staff that start leaving in their droves because they’ve lost confidence in you. You could have almost always got their sooner with an expert which means whilst you were getting to grips with things your competitor just got a march on you. Have you counted the number of chargeable hours it took you to get up to speed and implement? What was the cost of lost business? So ask yourself again – is it worth the risk?

Setting up Google Adwords might be all well and good but if you haven’t set them up correctly in the first place then you might prematurely write it off as an effective marketing channel – as well as spend a lot of money without getting any results. Same with your accounts. You might think you got them right but the tax department might think you didn’t. A good accountant should always be able to pay for themselves through great tax advice and financial structuring.

Question 3: What’s stopping me from asking for outside help?

Is it ego? Is it because you don’t listen? Is it because you think, rather than know, you’re right? Or is it that you’ve been burnt by false promises? Remember your expert should have your business interests at heart, not their own so don’t fall for those “special radio deals”. They’re selling it cheap for a reason.

Are you categorically sure you know your business and your customers clearly? Sometimes being on the inside means you need to step outside and look back in to get an objective, unbiased view. You need to see the wood through the trees.

Whether it’s your building your own website for search engine optimisation, designing your corporate identity to attract a better form of customer or writing your own marketing plan and advertising, do yourself a big favour and get proven, qualified, independent professional advice.

Big companies and sports stars do because they know they can get to where they’re going more efficiently and effectively than if they did it themselves. They know they can always learn more from others and continually improve their performance. And so should you. So what’s stopping you? Do yourself and your business a favour.

Are You Trying To Do It All On Your Own? - An inspirational Article

Jane was frustrated. She'd been working hard in her business and putting in long hours. Yet, somehow, she hadn't been seeing the results she'd wanted. "All this time and activity, and seemingly for nothing! And yet, I KNOW there are people out there who could do with what I have to offer, AND there are other people like me who are doing really well in their business! WHAT is it that I'm missing? What am I not doing?"

We coached a little around what success meant to her and then she cried, "I want to be able to do it myself!"

"By yourself?" I asked. "Did you know, that no matter what you do, whatever business you're in, you can never ever do it all by yourself? We're inter-related. Whatever it is that you need is always going to come through someone...you can never ever do it all by yourself, even if you want to."

In that moment, the light bulb lit up for Jane. She'd been taking all that action, her intention in relation to what she wanted was in the right place, she'd felt clearer about her vision than ever before, but this one thing was blocking the flow. While Jane always knew that she loved helping others, the one person she wasn't helping was herself. By thinking that she had to prove herself and do it "all on her own", she often missed the opportunities.

Opportunities often show up in ways we least expect. We might meet someone who's perfect to help with marketing, for example. But we think, "I have to do it myself," and so never take them up on their offer - whether it be to work with them as an associate or to engage their services as professional marketer. Similarly, many entrepreneurs think they must do their own book-keeping, their own administrative tasks, manage their own email and everything else as well.

We all easily recognize that when we're doing, say, the book-keeping, we're not doing another perhaps more important activity that could generate income. But we don't necessarily recognize the impact from an energetic perspective.

If we're working hard all of the time, being busy doing all of the time, we can't hear the messages of inspiration that come through for us. And when we stop the doing, we're usually too tired. The next day, the same thing, and we go around the same old cycle...and we get the same results.

It's not our fault in that our society and culture has taught us that we must work hard for a living and that we have to depend on ourselves and be independent. But now we are learning about what it truly means to be inter-dependent.

If you're like Jane and you're finding that you've been working hard and yet not getting the results you want, take a step back. Is this a similar pattern to one you've done before? Are you doing the same things as before because you don't really know what else to do differently? We often feel a sense of comfort in doing the same things over and over, even when it doesn't bring the results. Because it feels better to be doing "something" than to be doing "nothing".

But, think about it. If doing that something is getting you "nothing", does it make any difference to actually do "nothing"?

I'm not suggesting that you do nothing at all, of course, because action is always needed. But if you're stuck, you need to stop and take a step back, clear your mind, clear your energy and spend some time getting into that energetic space where your energy feels clear once again.

Then decide on exactly what you want, listen or watch out for the inspiration that comes and run with it - quickly!...before you think yourself out of it.

It often takes courage to grab the idea and put it into action right away, because we've been taught to think everything through to its utmost detail. Yet, many successful entrepreneurs talk about following their intuition, not knowing everything at the beginning, and figuring things out as they go along...in FULL trust that they will always have the answers when they need it.

So trust. You will have everything you need, when you need it.

The Business of Being Black in Britain

Though I honestly believe that race should never be used as an excuse for diminishing one’s destiny I do recognise that the issue of race can often restrict the progress of some ethnic groups. Often those groups find themselves in situations whereby they have to take it upon themselves to promote their causes or highlight positive stereotypes – not only empowering each other but also showcasing their abilities to society as a whole.

Unfortunately this type of segmentation may be overlooked or criticised as a means of further distancing ethnic groups from mainstream society. Having networked in a variety of circles and attended a number of events geared toward ethnic minorities and specifically Black ethnic social groups I have found a number issues being raised by my counterparts – lack of consistency, lack of structure, lack of clear purpose and unity, place of public relations.

One recent nationally promoted pageant(which I’ll leave nameless for now so as not to add to its negative feedback) was headlined by an African American movie star. I admit that I was bemused by this choice when the event itself was geared towards African & Caribbean British females, however this was the least of the problems surrounding the event. The show started late; thus causing anxiety for many of the ticket holders and participants. The door management was not entirely courteous nor was it accommodating to the so-called VIPs or sponsors who helped to support the event. There was no crowd control; an air of rowdy gusto prevailed which dampened the event and baffled some of the celebrity judges. Contestants complained of disorganisation and poor conditions back stage, despite having to pay an application fee to partake in the pageant. To top it all off the show organisers were not forthcoming with an apology or acknowledgment of the issues that occurred including the headlining American movie star leaving mid-show. Don’t get me wrong I derive no pleasure from reporting about this- in fact it’s with disappointment that I share this tale! Having been involved in event planning and organisation in the past I understand how difficult it can be to hold an event – unfortunately given the polarised nature of the event all these issues screams out negative racial stereotypes which even people in the black community raised.

Not all is lost though – I am an advocate for positive intergration – celebrating ethnic achievements through support and transparency. I recently attended an event at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre called the Black Youth Achievements’ Awards - an awards ceremony showcasing the accomplishments of Black Youth in Britain. Founder Kay Oldroyd and her team put together a highly entertaining and inspirational event. With sponsors such as Sophia A Jackson of Afridiziak.com and the award winning Rhoda Wilson of The Rhoda Wilson show presenting the awards the event was a great success. What made it all the more endearing was the founder Kay’s genuinely humble interaction and availability throughout the course of the event. “The objective of 'Black Youth Achievements - The Awards' was to emphasise, reveal and promote positive actions and achievements of young black people (those of a African / Caribbean heritage) within the UK community.” In comparison to the aforementioned beauty pageant this fledgling event made the diverse audience from all ethnic origins feel proud.

I am not writing this to criticise nor pick sides – in fact I had to make this comparison to make it clear of what is truly possible within the black and ethnic minority community. Negative stereotypes which sometimes manifest are not the be all and end within our communities, until of course there comes a day when social groups can see past these stereotypes to a path of true solidarity.

The annual BB Awards event is jointly organised by BBI and SEF. The aim is to recognise, reward and celebrate the monumental social and economic contributions of individuals and organisations to Great Britain and humanity in general.

This weekend we received some great news - that one of our clients won an award as best in her field! Rhoda Wilson won Best TV Presenter at the BEFFTAs 2009.

The 1st Annual BEFFTA Awards took place at the luxurious London Hilton Metropole attended by a host of stars within the black community in the UK. The award ceremony aimed at honouring and giving a platform to the well known and the not so well known personalities within the entertainment, film, fashion, television and arts was hosted by Richard Blackwood and Comedian Miss London. On this glittering night celebrating black talent Rhoda Wilson took home the award for Best TV presenter. Other winners on the night were Dizzee Rascal, Leona Lewis, and Rudolf Walker, who was honoured with the lifetime achievement award while comedian Kojo won the BEFFTA Inspiration Award.

Caribbean Savouries' very own Caribbean Food Delights Jamaican Patties has also been nominated for best new product at the World Food Awards alongside Levi Roots, Reggae Reggae Sauce.

Career development across borders

A really good friend is planning to relocate to Nigeria to take up the role of Managing Director of a subsidiary of a multinational company. I cannot express how proud I am of my friend. Not only for getting the position but for taking a risk. Starting a life and a new career in a foreign country can be daunting and somewhat of a risk. However it can also be the most rewarding experience that one can ever go through. I get messages from friends and contacts all over the world who have made this leap and have not looked back since.

RSL aims to break down some of the negative perceptions that go with career change - particularly in Africa. There are so many opportunities within this richly diverse continent, opportunities open to everyone willing to take advantage of them. Angola is currently undergoing enormous economic reform and regeneration with its Finance Minister Jose Pedro de Morais receiving acclaim from International publication The Banker as Africa's best Finance Minister. Nigeria is re-BRANDING (see article 1) itself as an international financial powerhouse; one only has to look at Diamond Bank's recent inclusion on the London Stock Exchange to see that change is afoot. These are just a couple of countries with opportunities for business investment and career development in Africa.

Of course Africa has its problems which one cannot deny but amidst these difficulties there are many opportunities for change and lucrative career contracts. If you are interested in moving there make sure that:
You do your research on the role and the country
Organise your finances and travel documents
Stay safe - crime and illness happens everywhere but try to take all necessary precautions
Enjoy the experience - it can be life changing!
